I have a love/hate relationship with money. Well, let me clarify. I have an endure/hate relationship with money. (The Bible says we’re not supposed to love it.) On the one hand, we have to have it. To live. So, I endure it for that reason. On the other hand, money causes a lot of problems. That’s why I tend to hate it. When it comes to church ministry, things don’t automatically improve just because Christians are putting money in velvet-lined stainless steel things. In fact, the arena of church giving is bedecked with controversy, hucksters, mistrust, hoarding, profligate spending; it has a heritage of disqualified pastors, filching money counters, distrustful members, and yes, wrecked churches.

Every job is tough. No doubt. In fact, it’s kind of appealing to think of all the reasons why your job is actually one of the hardest jobs in the whole world. It’s very possible that you do have one of the hardest jobs in the whole world. Long hours. Mean boss. Uncomfortable chairs. Angry coworkers. Nasty coffee. We all have a series of complaints, difficulties, and genuine unpleasant tasks that affect our work. There is something that seems to have been overlooked in the recent financial hullabaloo. Everything and everybody has been affected by the economy. Thousands of people have lost their jobs. What seems to have been overlooked, however, is the difficulty in ministry jobs. Because churches have experienced plummeting giving, they’ve had to let staff go. Perhaps you’re a pastor who’s been caught in a difficult situation. Maybe you’re an amazing media director that the church simply can’t take on. Now there is a large number of people without ministry positions, and therefore without a job or income. What do you do when you’re without a ministry–without a job?
