Even if you don’t know what it means, the word “syncretism” sounds a bit suspicious—one of those scary “-isms” that you know you’re supposed to reject just because. Why would we even bring up the subject of syncretism? We bring it up because this scary thing we call syncretism is not an isolated problem that foreign missionaries have to confront. It’s a widespread problem with its victims sitting in your pews, living in your community, and standing in desperate need of truth—absolute truth.

Proverbs 22:6 states, “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.” Now, obviously we cannot be protecting our children by being with them 24/7 (nor would they want us to be). Materialism is probably the number one cause of death of Christianity in America. We live in a “keeping up with the Joneses” society, where we need to out-do and out-spend our neighbors to feel good about ourselves. Growing up, we are taught that money and things equal status and a good social life. Yet Jesus says in Mark 10:25, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.” It’s also quoted in Matthew 19:24. So how important is this lesson that it should be quoted in two gospels?

Microsoft’s design software, Publisher is a useful tool for designing church media in-house, especially because of its low-cost and familiar interface.
